Delicious Foodstuffs: Food Truck Crawl

Back in July, my brother and his friends had the idea of hitting up all the food trucks from Manhattan to Brooklyn and see what these vendors had to offer. So when he planned to do the same in LA, I totally jumped on board. We hit up a total of 5 trucks beginning Saturday at midnight and boy, was I completely satisfied…

Chinese style tacos! What more could you want? Meats offered include Kung Pao chicken, BBQ pork and the usual carne asada and al pastor. Friday night/Saturday morning's special was lengua (tonuge) - one of my favorites ever. The guys, Dominic and Lawrence, not only hooked my brother and I up with the most amazing spread, but what really impressed me was these guys were only doing this for fun! Both guys have full time jobs and run the truck 3 nights a week. Lunch service should be up this week though. Good luck guys!

To be honest, the yellow truck and the name didn't really tell me what they were about so I had zero expectations for what they had to offer, but this truck totally blew me away… hell, blew my Mom away too and she's the most picky eater I know. Everything was totally fresh and made with care. If you find this bus, do yourself a favor and get the corn flapjacks and sweet potato fries. Neither of these dishes tasted heavy and was inhaled by yours truly.

Immediately after I scarfed down my last flapjack I walked about 20 paces from Gastro Bus to Cool Haus, the organic ice cream sandwich truck. You're allowed to pick your own cookie and your own ice cream. What's even more awesome? The wrapping used to keep you from having sticky fingers is edible soy paper! No more bland waxy mess in your mouth cause you can just eat it now. To people who know me, it's a shock that I even ate an ice cream sandwich, but it's all about the research.

This is more trailer than truck, but you know, same difference. Not much to this bus; all ingredients (even the condiments) are organic and they're quick. I had their brat dog and it was just as tasty as any street dog I've had, which is A OK with me.

The last stop of the day was this Japanese inspired burger truck. By this time I was already in pain and in mid-coma so I was only able to try one "burger"; their spam and egg. The patties were actually thick sheets of rice and it had spam a fried egg, lettuce, tomato and some sweet soy sauce. It took me back to my childhood when I was about 6 eating this exact dish in a bowl. It's a classic.
LA, if you're in the mood to hit up some food trucks and don't have the time to drive around all day, then I suggest you hit up the Abbot Kinney Festival in Venice Beach this Sunday. It's an all day festival and they are blocking off a section just for the food trucks to park and serve festival goers. It'll be good baby steps to take should you decide to take up your own food adventure.
