First Impressions:
- Indie-folk rockers Deer Tick are releasing their latest studio album, The Black Dirt Sessions on Partisan Records. This is the group’s third album and features the latest incarnation of Deer Tick with the departure of Andy Tobiassen and entrance of guitarist Ian O’Neil.
-The album kicks off “Choir of Angels.” The song is reminiscent of Daniel Johnston’s “Walking The Cow,” which is a good thing.
-“Goodbye, Dear Friend” make melancholy sound beautiful. The track features John McCauley singing about a friendship that has gone by the wayside. The lyrics are powerful and emotional.
-JohnMcCauley channels his inner Billy Corgan in “Sad Sun.” This could have easily been on one of Smashing Pumpkins’ earlier albums.
Key Tracks:
“Choir of Angels,” “Goodbye, Dear Friend,” “Sad Sun”
Predictions:
The Black Peel Session shows Deer Tick’s growing maturity and self-awareness in their songwriting. McCauley’s vocals are really cool and his lyrics are his strongest to date. Of course, the music isn’t too shabby either.
