While this week might be Spring Break for college kids bound for Cabo, it’s arguably the holiest week for music lovers—that’s right, it’s South By Southwest. To help prep for your SXSW experience, FILTER is bringing you a taste of the Austin festival’s must-see musicians each day this week in the form of excerpts, interviews, and even a tattoo giveaway. So take some time out from mapping your road-trip, rest those cowboy boots and brush up on SXSW’s top-tier performers.
For day four of SXSW week, we’re highlighting the ultimate buzz band of 2009, the minimalist electro-outfit The xx. Born and bred in London, this three-piece dream pop outfit took the music scene by storm in 2009 with its debut album, XX, which climbed to the top of many “best-of” lists. Throughout SXSW, The xx will gives audiences a taste of why it deserves all its acclaim multiple times over with shows at the French Legation Museum March 18 and the Village Voice's SXSW Party March 19.
In the latest installment of FILTER’s Good Music Guide, singer-guitarist Oliver Sim divulges why he’s wary of discussing the meaning behind the band’s lyrics.
“A lot of people come up asking me to explain my lyrics, but I wouldn’t want to disappoint anyone. Some of my favorite songs I’ve sort of connected to my own experiences. And if the person that wrote those lyrics explained them and it didn’t match what I thought them to be, I would think it would be quite heartbreaking.”
