HEALTH

HEALTH’s namesake is certainly a misnomer because the dance-y inoculation Get Color receives smothers the L.A. noisniks’ utmost talent—their annihilating force. Breathless tracks such as “Die Slow” and “Eat Flesh” use the new conceit to their advantage. They twist and writhe like insects under a magnifying glass. Perhaps criticism comes into consideration through pairing Color to the promising debut from label/tour-mate Pictureplane. The Coloradoan’s smudged noise-house ably splits the difference between collision and back beat, build and release. HEALTH on the other hand seems to be mired in a twisted metal heap of low-grade synths (“Death+”), or retreads of their Boredoms-cribbing days and snarling guitar haze (“Before Tigers”). The atonal freak-outs of the almost cherubic “Severin” will grab listeners’ ears on cognitive dissonance alone. Get Color may not be as revelatory as its predecessors, but its slight merits gradually ooze into the wounds it so fiendishly creates.
